What are the different types of power plants found in modern air rifles and pistols?
Spring or Gas Piston - This can be found in low power pistols and rifles for kids and are suitable for target practice. They will shoot at lower speeds (190-350 feet per second) and example is the Daisy Red Ryder. They can also be found in powerful hunting rifles shooting at speeds of (800 - 1600 feet per second) called Break Barrels, Side levers, Under Levers, these are all high powered springers. The strength required to cock these rifles and pistols can be a good indication of the age they are intended for. These recoil like a small caliber firearm, but there is recoil in both forward and back because of the spring release and mechanism finally stopping in the opposite direction. It's a challenge to make accurate shots with these springers, it's part of the fun! With these guns you provide the power to make the shots.
Single and Multi pump - These can be low powered single pump or high powered multi-pump pistols and rifles. The strength needed to power them is usually a good indication whether they are suitable for kids or adults. The single pump versions will shoot at speeds from 350- 450 feet per second and are great for target practice. The multi-pump versions can also be used for hunting and can reach speeds of 1000 feet per second. Multi-Pump versions are easy to control the power output by the number of times you pump the gun. There are very accurate shooters with little to no recoil. (they have push or lift when shot) With these guns you provide the power to make the shots.
Co2 Powered - These are a great "no labor" solution in an affordable package. Many are single shot bolt action, Some have magazines that allow for Semi-Automatic firing (every time you pull the trigger the rifle or pistol shoots) There are also pistols and rifles that do 3 or 6 shot burst and even some that are fully-automatic (you hold the trigger down and the pistol or rifle shoots until all the ammo is gone or the C02 power runs out. Many of these have limited magazines of 8 - 10- 12 shots, some have 20 -30 - 100 shots! With these guns you purchase the power to make the shots.
PCP - or High pressure compressed air. These are the best of the best and they come with a price on their head. You need special equipment to power these rifles and pistols. Before you purchase one of these, you need to find a location like New England Airgun that can fill a scuba style tank for you, or you can use a special hand pump or compressor. These guns are filled with 2000 to 4500 psi of compressed air and come in all calibers from .177 to .50 cal..... some even shoot arrows! With these guns you purchase the power to make the shots.
